Let Casey help manage your forest with his combination of professional forestry experience and a passion for running a chainsaw! Commercial logging requires heavy equipment and large harvest volumes, but even small patches of forest still need to be managed to promote healthy trees and your enjoyment of them. Human scale woodcutting can meet your objectives with a minimum impact to remaining trees and the ground around them. Log removal is generally done with an ATV and log arch and can be scheduled for winter when ground is frozen.
Here are some services we are able to offer:
- Custom hand logging
- You’ll get your trees harvested and put where and how you want them, whether that be leaving the wood to add forest structure, bringing it to a specific place for you, or prepared for firewood processing.
- Forest thinning to encourage growth of preferred species or individual trees
- Windbreak thinning
- Field edge tree cutting and fence line clearing
- On-site firewood bucking and splitting for wood you already have piled
(Must have access to electricity for splitting) - Brush cutting and/or trail clearing
- Milling your harvested timber into custom lumber
- Chainsaw cleaning and sharpening
(As requested while already on-site, or arrange to bring them to our farm) - Discounts available for wood products we have a market for
- Insurance certificate can be provided upon request

Why we prefer ‘human scale woodcutting’
The term “human scale” refers to the relationship between the human body and its surroundings, including the physical capabilities of the human body. To us, it essentially means work that can physically be done by a human without additional heavy machinery or complicated tools.
Human scale woodcutting is an important aspect of forest management because it means we are taking care of the forest at an appropriate scale. We believe that whenever possible, management should also consider the future experiences of visitors, so let’s manage your forest at eye-level too. When you walk through your forest you see it at eye level, not through a window from several feet up in the cab of a machine. As an added bonus, woodcutting on a human scale is much less damaging to the remaining trees and more protective of vital top soil. It naturally slows down the pace of the work, meaning you can’t accidentally ‘go overboard’ because every action must be done with intention.
This type of work includes ‘boots on the ground’ hand felling of selected trees, moving the materials by hand or with lighter weight machinery (like an ATV), brush cutting and trail clearing by hand, and either scattering or piling of ‘slash’ piles (tree limbs and brush). We offer chainsaw cleaning/sharpening because having well maintained equipment is important for safe and effective tool use.
